Factors to Consider When Backlighting Onyx

January 15, 2021

Prized for its exotic and translucent qualities, Onyx is a beautiful natural stone that brings a sense of elegance and sophistication to any project. When viewed under natural light, onyx has a dimensional and effervescent appearance that has made it a popular choice in the design community. These same qualities are transformed when backlit. Depending on the spectrum of the backlighting source, the colors in onyx may appear warmer and more vibrant; Illumination reveals the subtle details of the complex patterns found in these extraordinary stones.

Often times backlit onyx is used on vertical installations, such as a wall feature, room divider, or fireplace. Another use is as countertops. This type of application allows you to get up-close and personal with the stone to see the breathtaking effects of this lighting technique.

There are many factors to consider when incorporating a backlit onyx project into your design; so consider the following tips when showcasing the natural beauty of onyx:

When backlit, the veining and texture of your onyx will intensify. So depending on how vibrant the veining or complex the movement, the result can be warm and inviting or a dramatic showstopper.

Don’t be afraid of white onyx. Prone to hot and cold spots when backlit, this distinguishing feature can be just the wow factor you are looking for; the perfect combination of subtle and dramatic.
